Ans. Ferric oxide--rusty iron--is what gives Mars' sandy soil its distinctive red color. The red color is caused by oxidation of the iron-rich minerals on the planet's surface. Mars is covered by rust. Due to its red colour Mars is named after the Roman God of war.
