
Robert Clive, also known as "Clive of India” and the "Baron of Plassey” was born in 1725 in Styche Hall in England. At the age of eighteen, he was engaged by the East India Company as a writer and went on to become one of the most successful British officials. He is popularly remembered as the founder of the British Empire in India. He defeated Nawab Sirajuddaula in the battle of Plassey.
Clive adorns a scarlet uniform, the Star of India and red ribbon of the Bath along with a waistcoat and breeches. With his face turned three quarters towards the right, he looks towards the onlooker. The left hand is positioned atop a walking cane while the right hand is seen holding his hat. The background is formed with a rich palette of green foliage along with mountains and other significant aspects of a landscape.
Nathaniel Dance, born in 1735 was renowned as a portrait painter. From 1754 onwards, he established himself with history paintings in Rome. Later in the 1770’s, he became successful as a portrait painter. He was the son of the eminent architect George Dance the Elder. He represented East Grinstead in Parliament and was created Baronet in 1800.
