Empress Victoria, Von Angeli, Oil on Canvas, 4’8” X 3’1½”
Location: PBG Mess

Queen Victoria was born in 1819 and held the title of Empress Victoria from 1876. She was the sovereign of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from1837 until her demise.

With a subtle background of a circular pillar leading towards an arch and a landscape in distant view, Empress Victoria in this three quarter portrait is seen with her gaze directed upon the onlooker. Attired in a black gown with wide flowing sleeves, the ermine edging on its borders present a contrast.

She wears on her head a muslin cap with a small coronet. Her hands are crossed with left hand over the right, in which she is represented holding a roll of paper with "Victoria R” written upon it. The Order of the Star of India, the Order of the Crown of India and the Blue Ribbon graciously adorn her black ensemble. Empress Victoria’s charm is aptly portrayed with a pearl necklace around her neck and pearl bracelets.

Heinrich Von Angeli, born in 1840 was an Austrian painter. After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, he went to Germany and was engaged with teaching and painting from 1856- 1862. His return to Vienna bought him appreciation from the European elite.
