Field Marshal Sir Henry Hardinge, also known as the first Viscount Hardinge is represented in this composition in three quarter profile posture. He stands tall against an open background with a scenic scape. The background also shows a small fort towards the right and a gun, painted towards the left.

This painting was obtained by Lord Northbrook's government through the Secretary of State in 1875. Viscount Hardinge is seen standing with his hands folded. His right hand strategically rests upon the left arm. The Star of the Order of the Bath embellishes his black coat. A white collared shirt attributes attention towards the black bow tie, worn around his neck

Lord Hardinge, Governor- General of India from 1844-1848 was made Viscount Hardinge of Lahore after his successful strategies against the Sikhs in First Sikh war of 1845. This war began with the Sikhs crossing the Sutlej river which led to four battles in Mudki, Ferozshahar, Alial and Sobraon. It led to the surrender of Lahore while Jalandhar was annexed to the Empire's domains. On his return to England he served the British Empire in several offices such as Master General of the Ordnance and Commander-in- Chief of the forces. He died in 1856.
