The President of India, Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil, paid a visit to Jaipur on the 29th October, 2007 and inaugurated the 12th World Lake Conference titled "TAAL 2007" at BM Birla Auditorium & Convention Centre, Jaipur. In her inaugural address, the President said that she is happy to note that the Conference is taking place for the first time in South Asia, a region well known for its diverse water bodies, including lakes. She stressed the need for involvement of all stakeholders - individuals, local communities, NGOs and Governments in restoring the health of lakes and people's participation for preserving them in a sustainable manner. She also underscored the need for effective legal protection to save lakes.
