The President launches e-Passport Scheme

The President of India, Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil launched the e-passport scheme of the Ministry of External Affairs at Rashtrapati Bhavan on June 25, 2008. The President and the Spouse, Dr. Devisingh Shekhawat were presented their Diplomatic e-Passports by the Minister of External Affairs, Shri Pranab Mukherjee on this occasion. Saying that she was delighted to launch the scheme, the President said that looking at India's rising international profile and growing global linkages and with travel from India becoming more frequent, passport services will need to be extended to many more people in the country. The introduction of the e-passport will make our passport more secure against fraudulent misuse and tampering and will also make it easier for our citizens to cross border points with more ease, the President said.
