Probationers of the 2008 Batch of the Indian Forest Service called on the President of India, Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil at Rashtrapati Bhavan on July 23, 2009. The President advised the Officers to work diligently and honestly and also to get the balance right between environmental protection and the needs of development. The President added that forests are our treasure and in ancient times India was known for its trees and its flora and fauna. Forests are also carbon sinks as well as a source of sustenance for many in India she said. The President also felt that the Officers should protect their frontline staff against the threat of naxalites while they worked in the field and also to work against poaching of endangered animals as well as against illegal felling of trees.
