The President meets girls from West Bengal who successfully resisted child marriage

The President of India, Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil, met 3 girls at Rashtrapati Bhavan on May 14, 2009 from Purulia District of West Bengal who have successfully resisted attempts to marrry them off at a young age. The President specially invited them to Rashtrapati Bhavan as an appreciation of their courage. The girls - Rekha Kalindi, Afsana Khatun and Sunita Mahato, are part of the National Child Labour Project(NCLP) and are at present studying in special schools. The President discribed them as messengers of social change and was happy that their resistance to child marriage has created a positive atmosphere against social evils in their immediate communities and localities. The President gave each of the girls Rs.10,000 which can be used for their further studies.
