Leonard Strokes, President of the Royal Institute of British Architects proposed the name of Lutyens to the Delhi Town Planning Committee, formulated to advise the Government about the architectural planning of New Delhi.
This sketch represents an overview of the plan and layout of Rashtrapati Bhavan in two views. With the central dome rising high in the middle, it is shown flanked by pillared forecourt, in a lower scale than the dome. Other domes which are smaller in scale form major constituents of the Viceroy House on all sides. It highlights the amalgamation of varied elements of Indian architecture. The lower section of this sketch outlines the numeric markings and calculations by Lutyens. Focus is also derived on the layout plan of other important elements of the Rashtrapati Bhavan’s architecture on one side of the sketch. His handwritten markings elaborate the keen observation of Indian architectural elements, assimilated in his own style, which he later titled as "The Delhi Order”.
Six domlets on the façade of this house have been deliberately conceived as minimal in comparison to other domes by Lutyens as he inverted the domes and converted them into bowled fountains. He recreated small fountains on those domes, to break the monotonous horizontal stretch of the Viceroy’s house.
