Location: Rashtrapati Bhavan Museum Ph-II

This sketch by Edwin Landseer Lutyens represents one of the domes of Rashtrapati Bhavan, the then Viceroy House. The detailed plans of arches along with their height and other dimensions have been outlined by Lutyens in this sketch.

1913 marked the beginning of a new era in the architectural journey of Edwin Lutyens. A shift was evident from the commissions for country houses to larger projects outside Britain.

After 1913, he received several commissions for designing war memorials, offices and the most grandiose architectural project ever conceived by the British Empire of New Delhi, namely the Government House in Delhi.

Working on the instructions of Lord Hardinge, Lutyens created the architectural spaces which defined India. For this, he took inspiration from Mughal and Rajput architecture. The main dome of Rastrapati Bhavan is influenced by the Sanchi Stupa. However, it was assimilated in the Lutyens plan in his own style. He added a second dimension to it, making it a double dome.
